Newcastle United lead West Brom and West Ham in the pursuit of Sporting Club de Portugal defender Rúben Semedo. Sky Sports report that the North-East club have offered £10m but Sporting want £13m for the centre-back.

Reports in Portugal last week claimed that a deal was done but the player’s agent, Catio Balde, denied these, saying “there is nothing”.

“Totally false. It’s a lie. This is not true at all”, Semedo’s agent told Desporto ao Minuto.

“It has no real background. It’s all a lie”, Balde revealed. “Rúben is with the national team and it is all a lie. There is nothing.”

The Portugal U21 international signed a 5-year contract just 3 months ago, which has a release clause in the region of £40m. However, it’s understood that any deal will cost significantly less.

Semedo will feature in the UEFA European U21 Championships which begins on June the 16th and Sporting are said to want any deal for him done before the tournament kicks off in Poland. He made 31 appearances last season in all competitions, including 24 in the league as the Lisbon club finished 3rd.

The 23-year old is thought to be keen on a move to the Premier League and – as well as Newcastle – has drawn attention from West Ham, West Brom and Southampton.
