Kamil Glik – Benitez’s First Signing?

Rafa Benitez is looking to bring Kamil Glik to St. James’ Park this summer, according to reports in Italy.
The 28 year-old Polish centre back is currently plying his trade for Torino in the Serie A, having already made 148 appearances for the club – scoring 12 goals in that time.
Glik scored 7 goals in the 2014-15 season alone, and that record would make him the 2nd leading goalscorer on a Newcastle side who have struggled for goals all season, and above all strikers on the roster.
The Torino skipper would also bring some leadership to a Newcastle team which has lacked it for years.
This transfer would most certainly show that Benitez has full control on transfers, as the Poland international does not fit the current transfer blueprint of buying young players with sell-on value.
Newcastle have had to rely on both Coloccini and Taylor this season, two defenders who were part of the Newcastle side that got relegated 7 years ago. The club have failed to bring in adequate defenders to replace them, with Chancel Mbemba being the only quality centre back bought since the club went down.
The Magpies face stiff competition from Everton, however, and Benitez may find it difficult to convince Glik to move to Tyneside over Merseyside, considering the current position of both clubs.
Glik also recently signed a new contract running through 2020, showing he possibly isn’t looking to leave the Turin club.
If Benitez is able to do it, Newcastle will have themselves a very good, experienced central defender who will improve their leaky defense as soon as he steps on the pitch.
