José Mourinho has hinted that Manchester United are working on a deal to bring the big Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimović back to the club from January onwards.

The 35-year-old enjoyed a memorable debut season under his former manager Mourinho at United, scoring an impressive 28 goals in 46 games in all competitions. Zlatan brought with him all his experience and it shone through on plenty of occasions, most notably in the Capital One Cup final against Southampton where he single-handedly won the match by scoring a brace.

However, Zlatan’s season ended on a sour note. The 116 time capped international suffered a serious injury to his knee in the Europa League quarter final tie against Anderlecht. The injury saw him miss the rest of the season and has meant he is out of action until December when he is expected to return to full fitness. This season ending injury culminated in Zlatan being released after his one year contract ended with the club and Mourinho spending large on 24-year-old Belgium Romelu Lukaku.

Ibrahimović has been working on his recovery at the Manchester United training ground and Jose is keen to bring him back for the second half of the new 2017/18 season:

“He wants more at football’s highest level, so we are having conversations and we are discussing the possibility of him staying with us for the second part of the season.”

He’s injured, he needs time to recover. He was very clear by showing that what he did last year was not enough for him – he thinks he can do more.”

Zlatan is also keen on a return to Manchester having supposedly rejected the chance to play out the end of his career in the United States, opting to fight for a reunion with his favourite manager.
