According to reports, Tony Pulis is looking to bolster his defence for next season with the signing of Chris Smalling, with the club is monitoring the status of the England defender. Pulis is looking to partner Smalling with Jonny Evans, a former United defender himself.

West Brom are said to be preparing a £10 million bid and will make their move after returning from their pre-season tour in Hong Kong.

The Baggies boss will need to move quickly with a host of Premier League clubs interested including; West Brom, Leicester, Crystal Palace and Stoke who are all keen on the England international. Pulis is keen to add a centre-back this summer having lost veteran Jonas Olsson earlier this year. The Baggies missed out on former Chelsea captain John Terry, and alternative target Kurt Zouma opted to join Stoke on a season-long loan this week.

Smalling is said to be on his way out of Old Trafford after falling down the pecking order under boss José Mourinho. He is likely to be Mourinho’s fourth choice among United’s centre-halves, behind Eric Bailly and Phil Jones, and new £32 million signing, Victor Lindelöf.

Pulis said during a press conference in Hong Kong that the club are targeting two more additions and ruled out a move for Kieran Gibbs, who has been widely linked with a move to The Hawthorns.

We have three or four other targets we are desperate for. We are juggling with two at the moment and that’s not Kieran Gibbs,” the Welshman said. Hopefully, by the time we get back home, we will have done those two.”
