Former Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness says Manchester United appointed the wrong man when José Mourinho joined the club.

Mourinho, who finished 6th in the Premier League, still managed to win two trophies and added a third piece of silverware with the Community Shield. The former Chelsea boss also helped Manchester United return to the Champions League, something they didn’t have last year after finishing 5th under Louis van Gaal.

However, Graeme Souness believes Mourinho wasn’t the right man for the job, insisting he was hired out of fear due to Pep Guardiola’s arrival in the blue side of Manchester.

The 64-year-old told Yahoo Sport:

“I didn’t think Mourinho was right for United and I said that from day one. With Pep Guardiola coming in at Manchester City, the people making decisions at Old Trafford felt compelled to go and get a big name manager and they ended up with José.”

“Manchester United expect to be in the top four of the Premier League and all we got from Mourinho for most of the season was moaning and groaning and excuses. He has taken on a very difficult job at Manchester United. He struggled to find his find his best eleven last season, if he ever found it.”

“All we got from Mourinho for most of the season was moaning,  groaning and excuses.”

“A big concern for me that their best player, for most of last season, was a 35-year-old Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with 35-year-old Michael Carrick also one of the top performers,” added Souness.

“Mourinho is used to winning league titles and finishing where he did last season in the Premier League will not be acceptable, but it won’t be easy to put it right.”
