Who Could Manchester United Sign In January?

With the January transfer window now open speculation has now turned as to if clubs will look to bolster their squads for the second half of the season. Manchester United are not known for doing a great deal of business in January but it is rumoured Jose Mourinho is looking to strengthen certain areas of the Manchester United squad this month. So, who could come through the door at Old Trafford this month?
The Benfica central defender has been constantly linked with a move to Old Trafford for the last month with Jose Mourinho said to be a big fan of the versatile central defender. Lindelof has been talked up by his fellow countryman, United’s own main man Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Ibrahimovic said Lindelof is ‘ready for the big clubs out there’. The defender has been left out of the last two Benfica squads for their recent games sparking speculation that a move to Old Trafford is imminent. However, the emergence of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo’s partnership at the back has cooled talk of a move to Old Trafford this month although this does look like one that will rumble on and on.
A Manchester United legend who arguably has not been replaced 2 years after he left the club. Luke Shaw was signed to be Evra’s direct replacement but the 21-year-old has struggled with injuries and a lack of trust from his 2 United managers. Which has seen the likes of Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind fill in at left back this season. At the age of 35, Evra would only return from Juventus on a short-term deal but would bring another strong character to the dressing room and would be yet another winner in the camp. Evra would be the perfect mentor for Luke Shaw and the return of Evra could reignite Luke Shaw’s Manchester United career. A signing that the fans would absolutely love and as Zlatan has shown age doesn’t mean anything.
A player that Jose Mourinho knows from his time at Real Madrid, currently playing his trade in France with Marseille and was a surprise star player for France at Euro 2016. With his countryman, Morgan Schneiderlin looking set to leave United this month possibly for Diarra’s current club Marseille the squad would need supplementing in the defensive midfield area. This season the alternative to Michael Carrick has been Marouane Fellaini playing the defensive role which really does not work at all. Diarra would be another player that will run through brick walls for Jose Mourinho and would add to the winning mentality that Mourinho is building at Old Trafford. A short-term option yes, but without a doubt a better option than what United have at the moment when Carrick does not play.
A player that was linked with a move to Manchester United in the Summer with the view that Jose Mourinho wanted to add some experience to the centre of his defence. Jose Fonte, a veteran of English football and current captain of Southampton could be a shrewd addition to the United squad, especially when the Europa League returns and Mourinho wishes to rotate his squad whilst showing respect to the Europa League, which United have an incredible chance of winning this season. Manchester United do need a bit more experience in the central defensive area but Mourinho could wait until the Summer to add a higher profile centre back with experience. But, with Fonte having handed in a transfer request Jose Mourinho may decide to swoop for his fellow countryman this month.
It wouldn’t be a transfer window without a client of Jorge Mendes linked to Jose Mourinho’s club. A long shot yes but with Rodriguez unsettled at Real Madrid and behind the likes of Matteo Kovacic and Isco in the pecking order, a move could materialise if a club is willing to pay the fee demanded by Real Madrid. Considering the huge commercial appeal of James Rodriguez around the world a deal would certainly benefit United’s gigantic commercial empire and would certainly appeal to Ed Woodward. Of course, Rodriguez is a brilliant player and would bring something new to Old Trafford and with the links to Jorge Mendes a deal can never truly be ruled out but this one is highly unlikely this month despite the links to United.
