Manchester United manager José Mourinho has revealed Marouane Fellaini, Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly and Michael Carrick have been ruled out from the Christmas fixtures. Michael Carrick has only appeared in one match this season due to a heart issue.

Fellaini has missed the last seven games after appearing in nine of the first 18 matches. This is Fellaini’s second stint sitting out for the knee injury this season after missing time earlier in the season. Mourinho did not give a timetable for the player’s return.

Valencia will miss time after his exit against West Brom, meaning Mourinho will have to remain cautious with the fullback’s minutes moving forward. Matteo Darmian did not fill in well in Valencia’s absence. The defence’s problems don’t end there.

[Bailly is] having surgery right now, or is just finishing, or is still there,” according to Mourinho.

Lindelöf has filled in for Bailly before, though he has had trouble adjusting to the Premier League. The young Swede or Chris Smalling are expected to take the spot.

United look to bounce back after the disappointing defeat in Brighton Wednesday. Paul Pogba will be available to return from his suspension and should sure up the midfield and bring back an attacking style and take pressure off the injury-riddled defence.
