Anthony Martial: Van Gaal “Makes me laugh”

French striking sensation Anthony Martial has been a hit at Manchester United since signing from Monaco at the end of the Summer Transfer Window, but the man himself told French media that he regularly feels the wrath of Dutch manager Louis van Gaal.
In an interview with French media outlet “RTL”, Martial revealed how he receives regular grillings from his manager who has developed a reputation for being a harsh taskmaster. In the revealing interview, Martial claimed that “If I misplace a pass or I take a poor touch, he [van Gaal] is the first I hear who is screaming at me”.
However, the 20-year old also told of how he has learnt to take his manager’s criticisms in his stride: “It makes me laugh because I know it is for my own good. He wants me to be a perfectionist and I think it is like that that I will progress. He has allowed me to progress enormously”
The rapid forward was quick to praise the heavily criticised Dutchman and dispel the idea that van Gaal is a difficult man to work under claiming that “He is a very good coach. In his nature, he seems cold on the exterior but he is a very good coach. He is nice – when we win, he is happy.”
Out of van Gaal’s many recruits, Martial has been a rare success, scoring 12 goals so far this season. United have struggled for form throughout the season and with injuries to key players such as Wayne Rooney, Martial has had to shoulder much of the goalscoring responsibility for the team.
United lay in sixth place in the table, behind West Ham on goal difference and only one point behind rivals Man City in fourth place. Champions League football seemed a distant dream for United fans a few weeks ago but now seems a real possibility. The United faithful will hope that van Gaal’s motivational methods will fire Martial up to get the goals to get them in the Champions League.
