Didier Deschamps has revealed his reasoning behind not selecting Anthony Martial for France’s squad was due to the Manchester United star being ‘better when he starts than when he comes on’. Deschamps’ side will face Bulgaria and Belarus in World Cup qualifiers next week but Martial won’t be included.

The 21-year-old’s future at Old Trafford was in doubt this summer following a poor debut campaign under José Mourinho. Interest in Ivan Perišić meant offers were received for Martial’s services with many believing the Frenchman was out of favour, however, his start to the 2017/2018 campaign may well have extinguished any doubts his manager had about him.

Now, after his frightening start to the season, many expected a return to the national team to be imminent, however, Deschamps has explained why he has been left out. Speaking on Martial, the 48-year-old revealed: “He’s a player who’s probably better when he starts than when he comes on,” Deschamps told reporters, via goal.

“A bit like [Alexandre] Lacazette. All 24 players want to start. Anthony is much better, he’s decisive. The last game at CSKA highlights what he can do. He’s getting back to a good level. He’s more used by [José] Mourinho.”

“He could have been in the squad. It’s a choice. He was there during the Euros, he went through a tough time, which he got over. I can only tell him to continue to make me think about him.”
