Wayne Rooney – Manchester United’s All-Time Leading Goalscorer

Wayne Rooney’s injury-time equaliser at Stoke has placed him at the very summit of Manchester United’s leading goalscorers list. Ex-United forward Mark Hughes’ side had been in the lead for most of the game, having taken the lead through a shot that came off Mata from Erik Pieters’ cross.
United then dominated affairs but struggled to find the equaliser as Potters keeper Lee Grant and the woodwork thwarted them time and again. Even the ever-dependable Zlatan Ibrahimovic seemed largely subdued and the stage was eventually set for Rooney to make an inspired intervention.
And Rooney duly delivered.
The Manchester United captain has long been heavily tipped to break Sir Bobby Charlton’s long-standing record and there can be no better time for him to write himself once again into United’s history book. The Englishman has seen his role at the Old Trafford club come under intense scrutiny in recent times, with many feeling that he is past his best and will only prove to be a liability for his side if he chooses to play on at the club. But Rooney has remained professional throughout the storms of criticism and his record-smashing 250th goal cannot be sweeter as he proved his doubters that he can still stand up to the challenge when his club needs him.
His somewhat bit-part role under Jose Mourinho this season has seen the record-breaking 250th goal prove elusive for some time but now Mourinho will surely be relieved that his captain has finally smashed the record and in the process preserved his team’s unbeaten run.
