Manchester United defender Eric Bailly has revealed a phone call from José Mourinho persuaded him to join the Red Devils over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side.

Bailly, who recently turned 23, was heavily watched by top European clubs whilst playing at Villareal. The Ivorian was on the verge of a move to the Etihad before Mourinho intervened and personally phoned him, whereas other clubs made contact with Bailly’s agent.

Bailly has perhaps been Manchester United’s best addition from their summer spending, consistently landing a starting place when available. The central-defender has drawn comparisons with Nemanja Vidic, who also gave his approval of the 23-year-old’s performances this season.

Speaking to The Mirror, Bailly revealed: “I was in the Ivory Coast and I received a call from a Portuguese number, he introduced himself but I just didn’t believe it at first.”

“Before I came to Manchester United, it was Manchester City who had been watching me. In my mind, I was going there. But then everything changed.”

“It felt like Mourinho was the one who really wanted me. He showed more interest, he rang me and that’s why I’m at Manchester United.”

“Manchester City contacted my agent, Barcelona as well were talking to my agent, but they weren’t as interested in me as Mourinho. He really pushed for the move.”

“Of course, the club is important when you sign, but the manager is so important. If a player feels like the manager wants you, wants to sign you, it gives you extra motivation.”
