Featured Manchester United Transfer Rumours

José Mourinho’s first season at Old Trafford has been a working progress. Operating with a squad that largely is not his and having to manage a difficult fixture pile up, Manchester United have been a functional team. It is clear to see from his demeanour that the United boss is not happy with his squad at Manchester United and even the starting eleven that is usually sent out do not have the hallmarks of a Mourinho team. The upcoming Summer transfer window will give Mourinho the opportunity to transform his Manchester United squad and take it to a whole new level and we will see a totally different Manchester United to this season.

So, how could Manchester United line up next season?

In his first season at United, Mourinho has deployed a 4-3-3 system in the majority of the games in order to get the most out of Paul Pogba. You would expect him to go with the same system again next season. The 4-3-3 gives the side the defensive solidity that Mourinho likes but this season the problem has been the lack of a combative defensive midfielder, a left back Mourinho trusts and a solid central defensive partnership. This season the system has not worked because of the players available to Mourinho do not provide the side with a solid base to go and play expansive football. That is why Mourinho has simply had to get by this season with what he has available to him to try and achieve the bare minimum of achieving a Champions League place for next season.

Undoubtedly, there will be major surgery on the squad this season so let’s have a look at the players that can come into the Manchester United line-up next season and transform that team.

Jose Maria Gimenez: Atletico Madrid

Everyone knows José Mourinho loves his central defenders to be rugged all out defenders. At Old Trafford, Mourinho has the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Daley Blind among his central defensive personnel. The triplet are not typical Mourinho central defenders and in fact they are not Manchester United central defenders either, they’re simply not good enough or reliable enough. Up until his injury Marcos Rojo was the partner for Eric Bailly, whom Mourinho signed under Louis van Gaal. For sure, Marcos Rojo is a player Mourinho trusts in his defence and will be an option next season but Manchester United need at least one centre back.

The perfect candidate is Jose Maria Gimenez of Atletico Madrid. Ginemez has been a stalwart of Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid team for the past few seasons. Of course to be a central defender in Simeone’s team like with a Mourinho team the player needs to be a warrior who is an out and out defender. Manchester United need a solid partner for Eric Bailly to give the line up the solid base at the heart of defence it needs to go out and play more expansive football. Uruguayan international Gimenez is excellent on the ball and can also play in midfield or at right back but vitally does not lack those hardened defensive qualities. Jose Maria Gimenez has all the traits needed to be the perfect José Mourinho centre-back at Old Trafford and give the team a much needed upgrade in quality at the back.

Benjamin Mendy: AS Monaco

The left-back position has been a waking nightmare for Manchester United this season. Luke Shaw has been openly slated by José Mourinho on several occasions and it’s clear Shaw is not Mourinho’s cup of tea. The main left back has been Matteo Darmian who is naturally a right back but is an overly defensive player who contributes nothing to the attacking play and does not impress defensively most of the time either.

One of the outstanding left-backs in world football this season has been Benjamin Mendy. As part of the free-scoring AS Monaco team, this season Mendy has showcased his qualities offensively and defensively. The Frenchman has been linked with a host of giant European clubs this Summer, including United. The lack of attacking impetus from left back this season has been a real hindrance but that will not be a problem with Mendy in the side, he has eight assists from left back this season. Benjamin Mendy has showcased his defensive qualities this season at the highest level notably against Manchester City in the Champions League in which he used his pace and defensive awareness to always remain solid defensively, rarely caught out of position. The pace and power of Mendy will give United a new a whole new dynamic from left back.

Fabinho: AS Monaco

Throughout his career, José Mourinho’s teams have always had a combative defensive midfielder. Whether its been Claude Makélélé, Esteban Cambiasso or Sami Khedira. Mourinho insists on having a shield in front of his back four to contribute to the defensive base of his team. This season at Manchester United Mourinho has flittered between Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini, Carrick is as reliable as ever but is ageing and is not very athletic these days. While Marouane Fellaini simply is not a defensive midfielder.

The solution to these problems, Fabinho of AS Monaco. An energetic defensive midfielder with an expertise of talking penalties. Fabinho fits the profile Mourinho is looking for in the defensive midfield area. The ball-winning skills of Fabinho will give Mourinho’s team greater efficiency in making the most of the transitional phases and counter attacks, which has been a huge problem this season.

Antoine Griezmann: Atletico Madrid

Antoine Griezmann, the serial goal scorer of Atletico Madrid who has established himself as one of the world’s very best players. Goals have been lacking for United in Mourinho’s first season so where better to look than a player with 26 goals this season. Griezmann is simply a wonderful player who is a joy to watch, a brutal finisher of chances but more importantly for United, has real pace. The versatility of the Frenchman is a real asset to any manager as he is able to play on either wing, behind the striker or as the striker and he plays all those roles to an equally implacable standard.

Taking Manchester United to the next level means addressing the issues in the lineup. At Old Trafford, you can see Griezmann occupying the left wing role which has been a struggle for Mourinho as no player has really impressed that much in that position. The pace and lethal finishing of Griezmann will give Manchester United a new dynamic and gives the team another top class player who is consistent, Mourinho needs that consistency in his team if they are to win the Premier League. The team that finished above United all scored at least 20 more goals than them, add the goals of Griezmann and Mourinho’s men are starting to close the gap on their league rivals.

Andrea Belotti: Torino

Andrea Belotti, ‘The Rooster’ is the striker José Mourinho has been crying out for at Old Trafford. United’s manager has often complained that he does not have a striker who is a fox in the box type striker who scores the scrappy type of goal and is always there on the end of chances. Andrea Belotti fits that profile of the out and out goal scorer Mourinho wants, Belotti is a bit of a throw back striker in terms that his game is scoring goals, nothing else. There can be no doubt, the striker you want on the end of a chance is Andrea Belotti, he has an outstanding 27 goals this season for Torino who are midtable in Serie A.

In so many games Manchester United could not finish their chances of which they created a hatful in games. They needed that striker on that can finish those scrappy chances which is why Belotti is the perfect fit at Old Trafford. The question is can Belotti do what he’s done in Italy in England, Torino are not the best of Serie A sides and yet Belotti shines and scores a hatful of goals. Put Belotti in the Manchester United team with the plethora of creative players at the club and he will get those chances and he will convert them.
