3 Left Backs Manchester United Should Target This Summer

Left back has been a real problem for Manchester United this season with Jose Mourinho seemingly unhappy with the options at his disposal. The only out and out left back Luke Shaw has been out of favour all season with questions over his mentality and fitness constantly looming. For the majority of the season Mourinho has preferred to deploy right back Matteo Darmian at left back with very little success.
All the signs point to Mourinho attempting to buy a new left back this Summer, so which players could Manchester United target for the left back birth at Old Trafford?
The Monaco left back has been a revelation this season after joining the principality club from rivals Marseille last Summer. Monaco are the highest scoring team in Europe this season, the full backs at Monaco contribute massively to the attacking play of the French league leaders. Mendy, a player with incredible pace and power with the ability to deliver a killer ball into the box, which was particularly noticeable in the Champions League against Manchester City. Mendy would be the ideal fit at left back for Manchester United but would certainly command a large transfer fee but United do have a history of positive transfer negotiations with Monaco so a deal is certainly possible.
Danny Rose is a similar type left back to Benjamin Mendy. Rose is without a doubt the best attacking full back in the Premier League having been transformed under the management of Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham. The pace that Danny Rose possesses is terrifying for teams he comes up against, allowing him to contribute massively to Tottenham’s attacking play. This season it has been noticeable that Rose has improved defensively and looks to have learnt the right balance between attack and defence, a vital trait for a modern full back to possess. As United know all too well negotiating with Tottenham is incredibly difficult and it looks near to impossible that Tottenham would allow one of their prised assets to join a Premier League rival.
The Spaniard burst onto the scene 3 seasons ago but has gone under the radar during the decline of his club Valencia. What cannot be doubted is the talent that Gaya possesses and he was thought to be joining Real Madrid after his breakthrough season but he signed a new deal at Valencia. Gaya is the typical modern full back with his noticeable traits being his attacking talents. He is a very quick player and is known for his acceleration and bursts of pace, in a way he is a very similar player to Luke Shaw the player he could replace at Old Trafford. Perhaps lacking the defensive maturity demanded by Jose Mourinho but that is something that certainly can be learnt by a youngster like Gaya. Manchester United could certainly pay the fee Valencia would demand and of course Jorge Mendes the agent of Jose Mourinho has influence at Valencia which could aid United in signing the left back.
