The new Premier League season is now beginning to take shape and the top of the table is already beginning to have a familiar look about it, with the two Manchester clubs and Chelsea currently occupying the first three positions.

Manchester City’s resounding win over Liverpool a week back along with their 6-0 thrashing over Watford has seen their title odds drop to 5/4 at best, with United deemed second favourites at 11/4 and Chelsea, having quickly recovered from their opening day loss at home to Burnley, on offer at a best price of 5/1.

There’s then a bit of a gap before Tottenham Hotspur, who can be backed at a general 12/1. Liverpool are as big as 18/1 after their 5-0 drubbing at the Etihad Stadium renewed doubts as to their defensive capabilities.

Bringing up the rear in terms of the ‘Big 6’ in the Premier League title betting are Arsenal, who are available at 28/1. Given what was widely agreed to have been a largely underwhelming transfer window, two defeats in their opening games and a general malaise at the club, those odds are only likely to appeal to the most ardent of Gunners’ fans.

Arguably the biggest factor at play in this season’s title race will be how the main contenders manage to juggle their domestic and Champions’ League duties (or Europa League duties if you see Arsenal as genuine title contenders).

There are concerns in some quarters that Tottenham, Liverpool and perhaps even Chelsea, might just lack the requisite strength in depth in key areas of their respective squads to challenge on two fronts, with one example being Liverpool’s failure to adequately address their defensive limitations over the summer being fully exposed on Saturday.

It’s very early days yet of course, but the title race could come down to a battle for supremacy between the Manchester duo or, to put it another way, a renewal of the La Liga rivalry between Pep Guardiola and José Mourinho.

City have attacking flair in abundance, but the summer recruitment of Nemanja Matić and Romelu Lukaku has certainly strengthened United and they now resemble a typical Mourinho team.
