Manchester City News Transfer Rumours

Life at Dortmund.

Ilkay Gündogan is an essential part of Borussia Dortmund’s industrious midfield. Gündogan joined Dortmund in 2011, joining from Bundesliga outfit Nürnberg. Since 2011, Gündogan has made a total of 125 appearances for Dortmund, winning the Bundesliga and reaching the Champions League final along the way. In Gündogan’s first full season, he helped them win their fifth Bundesliga title, contributing an impressive three goals and three assists at the age of just 21. With expectation growing, Gündogan proved his worth in the 2012/13 season, helping Dortmund finish in a respectable second place in the Bundesliga. The Bundesliga wasn’t the only competition that Bayern would pip them to, however, as Dortmund lost in the final to a very impressive Bayern side, despite Gündogan scoring a penalty to draw level. There were darker times to come for Gündogan, however, as he went on to play just one game in the whole of the 2013/14 season, as he suffered a major back injury. Despite having injury problems, Gündogan returned for the 2014/15, a season in which Dortmumd fans ought to forget. Missing out on the Champions League and finishing in a dismal seventh place was a truly shocking campaign for Dortmund and one that many people didn’t expect. Despite having a poor, poor season last year, this season has been far better from Dortmund’s point of view. This season, Gündogan has been instrumental in Dortmund’s ongoing success. All in all, Gündogan’s time at Borussia Dortmund has been hugely successful. Having been at Dortmund for several years, Gündogan has formed a strong bond with the fans. For City fans, we will hope this is Gündogan’s last season at the Signal Iduna Park.

Back to his best.

In this current season, Gündogan is back on top, top form. This season he has made a total of 28 appearances for Dortmund, helping them reach the europa league quarter-final. He is one of the reasons why Borussia Dortmund have succeeded this season. Favourites for the Europa League and back in Europe next season, Dortmund are back in their promised land. 2012/13 was arguably Gündogan’s best season in a Dortmund shirt, until this current season came along. Gündogan has been hugely impressive for Borussia Dortmund in their current campaign, showcasing his solid presence in midfield and a willingness to read the game like the back of his hand. Ultimately, this is a brilliant time to capture the signing of Gündogan. Back on top form and considering that he is still only 25 years old, he is yet to reach his peak. Since Gündogan’s lengthy injury in 2013, he has only missed a total of 15 games for Dortmund. A record that doesn’t do any justice to his ‘injury prone’ label.

Would he improve our current squad?

Now for the all important question, will Ilkay Gündogan join Manchester City? For me, it’s very realistic and would make sense for both parties. Reliable German newspaper BILD were the first to report the deal, suggesting that a deal in the region of £23M was very possible. Days later, Gündogan’s brother and agent, Pere, was pictured in Amsterdam talking to City’s Txiki Begiristain while he and Pep talked about possible transfers. With many media outlets suggesting a deal is almost certain, Gündogan looks set to be the first signing under the Pep era, presumably replacing Yaya Toure, who has set his sights on Inter Milan, it seems. For me, Gündogan would improve our squad quite substantially. He offers just about everything; passing, dribbling, defending, set-pieces. For me, these attributes are very important for a central midfielder and if you can specialise in these things, you will be successful, like Gündogan has been. Gündogan looks like a realistic and quality replacement for Yaya, who will simply not suit Pep’s style of play that he will adopt at City. Gündogan has the best pass completion rate in the whole of the Bundesliga this year, competing against the likes of Xabi Alonso, Thiago and even his team-mate, Julian Wiegl. Ideally, in my opinion, Gündogan and Fernandinho would form a convenient and practical partnership in the middle of midfield. All in all, Ilkay Gündogan would be a viable investment for City and a player who, in reality, would replace Yaya Toure at the Etihad.

Manchester City’s new midfield maestro.

With Gündogan, you get just about everything. A box to box midfielder who often roams around the halfway line, covering the defence and supporting attacks. This is exactly what City need, for me. With Fernandinho next to him, Gündogan could present himself as the ideal replacement for Yaya, who has been rightly slated for his defensive capabilities, in my opinion. With a £23M deal on the cards, Gündogan would be a perfect signing for City and a catalyst for more. In the world of football today, £23M for a player of Gündogan’s calibre is fantastic value for money. For City fans that may not know a fair amount about Gündogan, I am more than certain that he will prove his worth should he join. Ultimately, this deal is a feasible and realistic deal. For City, this signing would benefit us in a positive way, considering that he is one of the best centre-midfielders in world football. Personally, I hope to see Ilkay Gündogan in a City shirt next season and I’m sure many more City fans would agree with me. And if you aren’t convinced as of yet, you will be after a month or so. On the whole, Gündogan would be a signing of the highest quality, proving that we mean business on the transfer front. Ilkay Gündogan; Manchester City’s new midfield maestro.
