Joey Barton has backed Manchester United to beat Manchester City to the title this season because City’s South American stars ‘don’t like it when it gets cold’.

The Manchester duo share the same points tally with Pep Guardiola’s side clinching the top-spot due to their superior goal difference following Saturday’s 5-0 demolition of Crystal Palace.

However, Barton believes Guardiola’s side will not be able to repeat the same form throughout winter along with the fixture congestion due to South American’s not enjoying cold weather. The former Manchester City midfielder believes the red side of the city will clinch the title for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013 and José Mourinho will be the key factor behind it.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the 35-year-old explained his reasoning behind his choice of Manchester United over City, saying: “Mainly because the manager [Mourinho] is a serial winner. He knows how to win.”

“Also, I think when the cold weather comes and the fixture congestion comes, I think Manchester United have got the physicality to deal with it.”

“If you remember last year City started like a house on fire and then the cold snap comes in. Them South Americans, I’m not too sure they like it when it gets cold here.”

City, who have four Brazilian stars in their starting eleven more often than not with Gabriel Jesus, Ederson, Danilo and Fernandinho also have Sergio Agüero and Nicolás Otamendi who were born in Argentina. Given Agüero’s previous title wins at the Etihad, cold weather probably isn’t his biggest worry.
