Liverpool News Southampton Transfer Rumours

Dutch Defender and Southampton star, Virgil Van Dijk is all set to become the world’s most expensive defender as Liverpool are reportedly on the verge of luring the defender to Anfield in a £60 million deal. Reports suggested Van Dijk had matching offers from Liverpool and Manchester City, but the Express say the Southampton captain wishes to work with Jürgen Klopp ahead of Pep Guardiola.

The deal, whoever wins the race for the Dutchman’s signature, will also see Van Dijk becoming one of the highest paid players in the Premier League as he will reportedly pocket £200,000-a-week.

Van Dijk was a key part of the Southampton squad that qualified for the Europa League last season and established himself last season before he was hit with an injury.

The 25-year-old started his career at Groningen in the Eredivisie before moving to Celtic where he won back to back Scottish League Championships and a Scottish League Cup. His promising performances caught the eye of the then Southampton manager Ronald Koeman who signed him for a reported £13 million pounds and the move paid off instantly as Van Dijk was awarded Southampton Player of the year for 2015-2016. Since then, Van Dijk has continued his meteoric rise and was awarded the armband after Jose Fonte’s exit.

The Dutch defender is aerially impeccable and has a brilliant sense of tackling. Van Dijk is also a ball-playing defender and partnering with Joel Matip could be the cure to Liverpool’s poor defensive record in recent times.
