Liverpool forward Sadio Mane has claimed that manager Jurgen Klopp attempted to sign him at Borussia Dortmund before finally landing him at the Merseyside giants.
The 24-year-old was united with the charismatic German coach this summer as he moved to Liverpool for a fee in the region of £34 million. In an interview with BBC Sport, the lightning quick Senegalese international revealed: “I had the chance to meet Klopp when he was at Borussia Dortmund.”
At the time, Mane was at Red Bull Salzburg, where he 31 goals in 63 games before moving to Southampton in 2014. But Mane claimed, “I was at Red Bull Salzburg and he tried to sign me – but it didn’t happen and that is football.”
When asked about Klopp, Mane told the BBC “He is a good manager and he is someone who likes his players.”
The £34 million man also claimed that it took little time to be persuaded to leave Southampton to join Liverpool: “At the end of last season, he called me and told me he wanted me to come to Liverpool. I said straightaway that I want to come. It was the right time and right coach for me. I am very happy to be here.”
