Liverpool News

After what looked to be a frustrating summer of transfer activity for Liverpool, the final week looks set to be as exciting and exhilarating as the clubs current crop of players display against Arsenal. Since the arrival of Mohamed Salah from AS Roma, several weeks have passed in the transfer window with Jürgen Klopp’s side failing to make any inroads on their two other top targets in the shape of Naby Keïta and Virgil Van Dijk.

Just when every Liverpool fan thought that their transfer business was coming to a disappointing and mediocre end, the Reds look set to embark on what could be one of the most thrilling weeks in transfer history. Along with fresh news where Keïta and Van Dijk are concerned, the name of Thomas Lemar has also emerged in recent hours.

Naby Keïta

As a well-known admirer of the Bundesliga, it was no surprise to see Klopp scour his homeland in search of another midfielder. The likes of Leon Goreztka and Sergej Milinković-Savić were linked, but they were nothing more than the standard morning media gossip. There was only one man that the former Dortmund coach wanted and that was Naby Keïta.

The Guinean midfielder, along with the likes of Emil Forsberg and Timo Werner, were undoubtedly the main reason why RB Leipzig were able to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history. After his move from RB Salzburg, his debut campaign in the Bundesliga gave the 22-year-old the platform to flourish and put his name in line for a big money move. He certainly surpassed everyone’s expectations and registered 8 goals and 7 assists in 29 league starts.

Liverpool had had two separate bids in the last couple of months rejected; with the latter being a total of £66million. Just when it seemed that Leipzig and their director of football Ralf Rangnick continued to be stubborn in the Reds attempts to land their man, a breakthrough has been found.

The two clubs have formally agreed on a transfer that will see Liverpool pay the Guinean international’s release clause of £48million, which becomes active next summer, as well as a premium fee to ensure that they completed the deal. Keïta will remain with Die Bullen for the 2017/18 as they look to take on Europe’s elite, before arriving on Merseyside on July 1st, 2018.

Virgil Van Dijk

When it comes to funny transfer window moments you often think of Peter Odemwingie, Harry Redknapp or the Robert Lewandowski to Blackburn Rovers rumour. Whilst the long-running, and at times seemed never-ending, Virgil Van Dijk transfer saga certainly isn’t as hilarious as those particular moments, it will certainly be remembered for years to come.

The current Southampton defender has gone to extreme lengths to try and force through his dream move to Anfield and has even gone as far as handing in an official transfer request and being banished to train on his own by the club. In reality, the deal could, and should, have been done a lot earlier in the window if it wasn’t for some inexcusable and incomprehensible actions on behalf of Liverpool; resulting in an apology to the South Coast club and at the time formally ending all interest in the former Celtic player.

Despite this, the five-time European champions never really gave up in their pursuit and in the final few days of the transfer window, it still seems that a deal could be on. Mauricio Pellegrino believes that on September 1st Van Dijk will still be a Saints player, however, there are rumours that are gathering momentum that a medical could be booked for the 26-year-old in the coming days. The climax to this ‘soap opera-esque’ transfer is sure to be frantic, but one thing is for sure: Virgil Van Dijk will be wearing some sort of red kit as the deadline shuts.

Thomas Lemar

The final bit of transfer news regarding Liverpool is quite a substantial one as AS Monaco midfielder Thomas Lemar has, not only been linked but, two separate bids have gone in for the Frenchman. Usually renowned for being stingy within the realms of the transfer market, the Reds went straight in with an opening offer of a staggering £60million.

It’s reported that the Ligue 1 champions are contemplating the initial bid, despite being reluctant to sell another one of their top stars. FSG hope that the size of the offer will convince Monaco to start negotiations with the former Tottenham and Arsenal target. Liverpool will hope that the deal can be concluded quickly after France boss Didier Deschamps declared that any player still looking for a move will need to have his future resolved by today. Therefore, it is likely that the club would have to send representatives to the French training base to finalise the terms of the deal and the medical.

Signing Lemar would certainly be a statement of intent to Liverpool’s top six rivals and lay down a real marker for the remainder of the season. The 21-year-old dazzled for the French club last season and is keen to test himself in the Premier League, after failing to secure a move to fellow English club Arsenal.
