Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has slammed his former club and their rivals Liverpool, saying clubs of their stature should be aiming hire than a fourth-placed finish. United are currently 5th in the Premier League, a point behind Manchester rivals Manchester City and four behind Liverpool, who have played a game more.

The Republic of Ireland assistant manager was speaking at a Show Racism the Red Card event and admitted his embarrassment at his former club’s situation:

“When I see clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United celebrating getting into the top 4, I cringe at it, I really do.”

“Any of these big clubs – do you think that Real Madrid and Barcelona would be celebrating getting fourth? Come on, get a grip. It is about getting your hands on a trophy,” the 7-time Premier League winner added.

“People talk about getting into the top four because of the financial rewards and it was great for teams like Leicester to qualify but for the big teams, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, celebrating fourth? I say shame on you.”

Manchester United face Celta Vigo in the Europa League semi-final tomorrow night and should they win the competition, they could reach the Champions League regardless of their league finish.
