Merseyside Police will investigate death threats posted online to Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius after the German made two mistakes in the Champions League final, ultimately gifting Real Madrid the prize.

The targetted threats have been aimed at both Karius and his family, predominately via Twitter. One user wrote “Please, please, please, please get aggressive terminal cancer you pathetic excuse for a human being” whilst another wrote, “your f*cking sons deserve [to] die of cancer, you motherfucker.”

Karius had taken full-blame for the 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid and insisted he had ‘cost his team the game’, whilst Liverpool players were criticised for leaving him alone after the final whistle as he begged fans for forgiveness.

The Telegraph have since been told by Merseyside Police that they will be investigating the shocking comments aimed at the Liverpool goalkeeper, saying: “The force takes social media posts of this nature extremely seriously and any offences identified will be investigated.”

The loss of Mohamed Salah was also a huge blow to the chances of winning the Champions League for Jürgen Klopp’s team after he reportedly dislocated his shoulder after a challenge from Sergio Ramos. In addition to Karius, Ramos has also received similar abuse online and 150,000 people have signed a petition arguing that the Spaniard should receive a ban from UEFA for his involvement in Salah’s injury.

Though many Liverpool fans would like to remind everyone that those sending vile abuse do not represent them or the club, Merseyside Police have reminded those posting such things that they are investigating their comments.
