Marco Silva’s Watford held Liverpool to a draw in a thrilling six-goal thriller at Vicarage Road this afternoon. In Jürgen Klopp’s 100th competitive game at Liverpool, the Reds boss was overwhelmed with emotions down on the touchline that he laughed at his side’s defensive frailty after conceding three goals.

Watford took the lead thanks to a Stefano Okaka header early on. The striker nodded in a Jose Holebas corner. Sadio Mane equalised with a clinical finish only for Abdoulaye Doucouré to restore the lead from close range minutes later. Roberto Firmino’s penalty made it 2-2 before Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool the lead after 57 minutes. Miguel Britos bundled home from a corner in the 93rd minute, to deny Liverpool the victory.

The match came on the back of Friday’s opening match of the 2017-18 campaign which produced seven goals as Arsenal beat Leicester 4-3. The quality of defending these past 48 hours left spectators and pundits in disbelief. On the Sky Sports panel, Jamie Carragher and Jamie Redknapp had a heated argument over Liverpool’s defensive issues.

Redknapp argued that Liverpool needed a leader at the back to solve their defensive woes and picked out Virgil Van Dijk as the man to do that job. Ex-Liverpool player Carragher stated that no matter which defender Liverpool sign, they will still concede goals unless Jürgen Klopp changes how they setup during set-pieces.

The issue of Liverpool’s defence is clearly a divisive one; is it down to the players or the manager? The full video can be found below:
