Mauricio Pochettino has emerged as the first choice candidate to replace Zinedine Zidane after the Frenchman announced he would be leaving Real Madrid on Thursday afternoon.

Zidane won his third successive Champions League with Madrid this season but has decided to step down due to the belief that the club needs a change if they are to continue winning.

Now, with Zidane gone, Florentino Pérez will look to appoint former Espanyol coach Pochettino, according to Marca. The Argentine had coped well against Madrid in the Champions League last year, managing a 3-1 win and a 1-1 draw in the two group stage clashes with Tottenham.

If Pérez is to attempt to appoint Pochettino, a move is said to be nigh-on impossible after the 46-year-old signed a new contract at the North London club that runs until 2023. Though, if Pochettino pushes for a move to the club he has reportedly dreamed of managing, it could make life harder for Daniel Levy to reject any approach.

Rumours have suggested Pochettino’s contract at Tottenham has a clause in that would allow him to leave for either Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain if he was approached, however, this is thought to be speculation that has only been revealed after the news of Zidane’s departure.
