Spain and Barcelona legend Xavi has revealed Lionel Messi get’s ‘p*ssed off’ if his team-mates fail to pass to him during games. Xavi, who left Barcelona for a move to Al Sadd SC in Qatar, believes Argentina will have no trouble qualifying for the FIFA World Cup in Russia next year if they give the ball to their star man.

Passing the ball to the world’s biggest talent seems like a pretty obvious plan. But for whatever reason, it’s not working at international level. New coach Jorge Sampaoli has struggled to find a system that works effectively around Messi, and emerging superstar Paulo Dybala commented this week that “It isn’t easy to play with Messi.”

Argentina drew 0-0 with Peru last night, and are in huge danger of missing out on the World Cup in Russia next Summer. In the game, Messi orchestrated a host of chances that were squandered by his teammates and was unlucky not to score himself by hitting the post.

Xavi, who won 8 La Liga’ titles and 4 Champions League in Barcelona, remains optimistic about Messi and Argentina, provided they supply their number ten. “Barcelona and the Argentine national team cannot afford to allow 10 minutes to pass in a game without Leo Messi touching the ball,” the Spaniard said.

“Messi has to be involved in the game. He has to be where things are happening, where the ball is. In addition, he’s going to get pissed off. If he doesn’t touch the ball for five minutes, you have to bring him to where the ball is. He has to participate in the play.”

Despite their struggles during qualification thus far, Xavi still believes Sampaoli’s side have a chance to be crowned world champions in Russia come next year: “I think Argentina are capable of winning the World Cup next year,” he said.

“It’s true they’re in a difficult situation in South American qualifying, but we can all agree that if they qualify for the World Cup they will be one of the favourites.”
