Lionel Messi has admitted he is not interested in becoming the best player to play the beautiful game, despite many labelling him as the greatest of all-time. The Barcelona star also revealed he does not try to compete with anyone, with his long-standing battle for Cristiano Ronaldo not in his thoughts.

Messi has helped Barcelona to another La Liga title this season, however in the Champions League, the Catalan club crashed out after AS Roma did the unthinkable, beating Ernesto Valverde’s side 3-0 in Rome. The other contender for the world’s best title, Cristiano Ronaldo, has made it to Kiev where Liverpool stands in his way of a third successive European title and perhaps a sixth Ballon d’Or. However, Messi insists personal glory is not something he is focused on.

Speaking to TyC Sports, via Goal, the 30-year-old said: “I’m not interested in being the best in history. I have never suggested that: not being the first, nor the second, third or fourth.”

“Every time I start a season I try to improve myself, win everything, leave everything every time I go out to the pitch, give the maximum for my teammates and for myself. It does not change anything to be the best in history.”

“I always want to improve myself and I do not compete with anyone because I do not play to be the best in history but to improve myself year after year and to keep winning.”
