West Ham United were considered one of the winners of the summer in early August. However, now just a month later, the club are in a crisis. The Irons have lost their first three matches, and have a goal difference of -8.

The team’s abysmal form has been blamed on many different individuals, from the manager, to the board, to the players. The reality is that everyone in the club needs to do their part if the Hammers want to change their fortunes.

The Hammers have a favourable run of games coming up, which could see them catapult themselves back up the league table. The club play red-hot Huddersfield Monday, but the Terriers don’t have a squad that should scare West Ham. After that, they travel to the Hawthorns in a matchup against West Brom. Again, the Baggies don’t have too much quality in their squad, and on paper, West Ham should deal with them comfortably.

But the same could be said about Southampton and Newcastle. These are teams that West Ham should be beating comfortably, not being beaten by. So what has to change? First, the manager either needs to change, or Slaven Bilić needs to get this team together and up to play. Over the last 12 months, Bilić has lost the faith of the fanbase, and the Croatian needs to work extremely hard to earn it back.

Another thing that could see West Ham’s fortunes change is all of the players coming back. Andy Carroll and Winston Reid are both returning for the Hammers first home game of the season against Huddersfield. Both players are massive for the Irons on both ends of the pitch. Carroll is unplayable on his day and offers a great alternative to star signing Chicharito. As for Winston Reid, he is the heart and soul of the Hammers defence. A defence that looks out of place with Reid in it, looks absolutely lost when the New Zealand international isn’t in the squad. Bilić will be hoping that the return of Reid will help sure up an extremely leaky backline.

Marko Arnautović will be returning from his three-match ban after his nasty elbow that saw him sent off against Southampton for the matchup against West Brom on September 16th. Getting one of the Hammers main outlets of creativity for the match against the Baggies will be a massive boost for the squad. Arnautović has already apologized for his actions with words, now he will be extra motivated to show the Claret and Blue faithful what he is capable of.

Last but definitely not least, star playmaker Manuel Lanzini should return in time for the massive London Derby against Tottenham on September 23rd. The 24-year-old Argentinian has been sidelined for most of the season with a knee injury, but he will be looking to return with a bang as he has already scored three goals in four appearances against Spurs.

Out of West Ham’s next eight opponents in all competitions, only one finished higher than eighth in the league last season. The Hammers need to capitalize massively on this kind run of fixtures if they want to try and reach the lofty expectations set for this season’s squad. It’s in no one’s hands but the Irons now.
