Leicester City Transfers: The Lowdown

Featured Leicester News

Tuesday evening saw some of the more reactive elements of Leicester’s fan base go through something of a mini-meltdown as several developments broke: Drinkwater had handed in a transfer request and our potential placement had already joined West Brom, Mahrez was off to United/Chelsea/Arsenal dependant on which outlet you believed and we were apparently going to sign Andros Townsend for £10m plus Demarai Gray.

Whether or not the hysteria was justified remains to be seen, but it’s fair to say we have had a busy 48 hours and deadline day is predicted to be equally as frenetic. So, what has happened and what are the bookies predicting?

Danny Drinkwater

Sky Sports were first to break the news that Drinkwater has handed in a transfer request, pushing the narrative that he was attempting to force through a move to Chelsea following the London club’s reported £27 million bid. However, the Daily Mail later reported that this request was, in fact, handed in a month ago.

It is clear Drinkwater wants out, a U-Turn on his own statement that he would stay at the club for “a long time to come”. Perhaps he feels the club’s ambitions no longer match his own, but this move represents a huge risk for the England midfielder as Leicester seem unwavering in their insistence that no player can leave unless their valuation is met – in this case, believed to be around the £30-40m mark.

The Bookies Predict: He’s off. With odds as short as 2/17 to join Chelsea, and 7/4 to remain at Leicester, they seem very confident indeed.

Riyad Mahrez

The former PFA Player of the Year has made no secret of his desire to leave the club, with a transfer request submitted at the beginning of the summer. However, Leicester have again been insistent that their valuation must be met and with reports suggesting that they are holding out for £50m, both Arsenal and Roma have been priced out of a move, leading many Leicester fans to believe the Algerian may well remain at the club. However, on Tuesday SFR Sport reported that Mahrez has emerged as a shock target for Manchester United with Mourinho keen to bring the winger to Old Trafford and in the early hours of Thursday morning the news broke that Mahrez had left the Algeria training camp to finalise a move, with Barcelona rumoured to be the interested party.

The Bookies Predict: He’s off. Mahrez’s sparkling form this year has seemingly convinced Barcelona chiefs to meet Leicester’s valuation, with the Algerian 11/10 to join the Catalan club and 4/1 to remain at Leicester.

Demarai Gray

In one of the more bizarre transfer rumours of the day, Crystal Palace are reported to have demanded cash PLUS Gray for out of favour Andros Townsend. Gray is one of the club’s brightest talents, and this move would have raised more than a few eyebrows but fortunately it seems the club have seen sense and immediately rejected Palace’s proposal. Just to add further confusion, The Mirror then reported that Spurs were interested in the England U21 player, only for the Mail to report the opposite. Gray is still after increased game time, but hopefully he will find it at Leicester, after The Mirror then reported that Gray is set to sign a new bumper contract.

The Bookies Predict: Should stay, could be close. Gray is 8/11 to be a City player on Friday, but as short as 10/11 to join Spurs. It’s anyone’s guess.

The Best of the Rest

City are expected to return with a bid for Jonny Evans, but Man City remain favourites to sign the player. Ahmed Musa has edged closer to a move on loan to Championship side Hull City, which would seem him reunited with Leon Slutsky. Papy Mendy is running out of time to rejoin a club in France, with a loan move to Nice seeming the most likely. Interest in both Islam Slimani and Jamie Vardy appears to have cooled.
