On Saturday, 17 year-old Joshua Tymon was given his Premier League debut. He featured for 67 minutes in Hull City’s 3-0 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Tymon’s involvement is because he is the closest Premier League player to being born in this millennium. However as he is 17 he is not young enough to be the youngest ever Premier League debutant: in fact he is not even Hull’s youngest.
So, this got me thinking, who is the youngest ever Premier League debutant? Here are the 5 youngest ever Premier League debutants.
5. Jose Baxter
This English midfielder came through Everton’s academy and after ten years he made his Premier League debut at the age of 16 years and 191 days. Jose Baxter featured on the opening day of the 2008/09 season against Blackburn Rovers. He replaced Nuno Valente as he became at the time the youngest ever Everton player. Jose Baxter currently plays for League 1 side Sheffield United.
4. Rushian Hepburn-Murphy
This Aston Villa forward made his Premier League debut against Sunderland on the 14th of March 2015. He replaced Christian Benteke on the 83rd minute of the game as the Villans were 4-0 up. At the age of 16 years and 176 days he became the youngest ever Aston Villa player to feature in the new Premier League era.
3. Aaron Lennon
Aaron Lennon made his Premier League debut with Leeds United at the age of 16 years and 129 days old. As he made his debut in August 2003 he became the youngest ever Premier League player at the time. He came off the bench in a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, the side he would eventually play for, at White Hart Lane. The current Everton winger has since gained 21 caps for England.
2. Isaiah Brown
Isaiah Brown made his debut for West Bromwich Albion at the age of 16 years and 117 days. Isaiah Brown replaced Youssouf Mulumbu in the 86th minute as the Baggies fell to a 3-2 defeat at the Hawthorns. The match took place on the 4th of May 2013 which let Brown become the youngest ever West Brom player to feature in the first team. Isaiah Brown made only one appearance for West Brom before he signed for Chelsea in July 2013. Isaiah Brown made one appearance for Chelsea before spending time on loan at Vitesse and Rotherham United.
1. Matthew Briggs
At the age of just 16 years and 65 days Matthew Briggs broke Premier League history after making his debut for Fulham. Briggs replaced Moritz Volz after 77 minutes as Fulham fell to a 3-1 defeat away to Middlesbrough. The defender then spent the next 4 seasons on loan at Leyton Orient, Peterborough United, Bristol City and Watford before he was released by his boyhood favourite club. Briggs was then signed by Millwall before he went on loan once again to Colchester United. The Guyana international now permanently plays for Colchester United.
