Out of contract Cuco Martina has left Southampton in order to join Everton, allowing him to reunite with the Dutchman who signed him at the south coast side back in 2015. Although being born in Holland, Martina decided to represent Carribean nation Curacao but has played most of his career in the Netherlands.

The 27 year old made himself known at Dutch club RKC Waalwijk, playing a total of 57 games over the space of two seasons, with 53 of them in the league. Martina’s consistent displays earned him a move to one of the biggest clubs in Holland, FC Twente. In his first season at the club, Martina contributed to the clubs 3rd place finish whilst in 2014/15 the club finished 10th out of 18 but were just 3 points off qualifying for the Europa League Qualifying stages.

After 48 league appearances with FC Twente, Martina was bought by Ronald Koeman at Southampton for a fee around £1,000,000. Under Koeman, Martina played 15 times in the league in his debut season, scoring a screamer against Arsenal but in his second season at the club, Claude Puel made him a fringe player, only making 9 league games last season.

With Martina out of contract at the Saints, Koeman has swooped in for the player who has 30 international caps with Curacao. With Seamus Coleman likely to return in the new year, following his horrific leg break during the Republic of Ireland vs Wales match back in March of this year, Koeman needs a back up right back who can fill in whilst Coleman continues his recovery.

Having signed Martina for a second time, Koeman said this to the clubs website:

“Cuco Martina is an experienced player who can perform in different positions at the back, which is important. It’s also important, with the number of games we will face in the coming campaign, that we have strength and competition in the squad. I brought the player to Southampton, so I know what he can do for us here and this is why I’ve now brought him to Everton. He is a player who will strengthen our squad and be able to play in different positions when that’s needed, too.”
