According to the Daily Mail, Gareth Southgate is keen to take Ruben Loftus-Cheek to the World cup, provided he stays fit until the summer.

The England manager has been a fan of Loftus-Cheek since his days at England youth level. The Crystal Palace midfielder was a regular in Southgate’s England Under-21 side and the three lions boss was at the Vitality stadium as Loftus-Cheek made his first start since December.

The 22-year-old was very impressive in his England debut against Germany and the midfielder capped a fine debut with an impressive man of the match performance at Wembley. Southgate believes that Loftus-Cheek’s technical ability as well as his physical presence is needed in England’s midfield with the current squad lacking strength in depth in that position and Southgate sees Loftus-Cheek as the ideal player to fill that role.

There are reports that the England manager is undecided over the last three spots in his 23-man squad. Southgate confirmed that he would not try and convince James Milner to join the World Cup squad. The 32-year-old has been in excellent form this season with stellar performances in the Champions League also.

Recent injuries prevented Loftus-Cheek from playing in the friendly fixtures against the Netherlands and Italy last month. The midfielder was sidelined by a knee injury since December and has only played a total of 108 minutes since then.

The Crystal Palace midfielder is now back to full fitness and Southgate would hope very much that the injury problems are over. With an added incentive of playing at the World Cup, Ruben Loftus-Cheek will be determined to stay fit until the end of the season.
