Barcelona Crystal Palace Transfer Rumours

According to recent rumours, Crystal Palace are readying a move for former Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen in the summer transfer window. With Mamadou Sakho returning to Liverpool following his loan spell, new Palace manager Frank de Boer is said to be targeting the Barcelona man to strengthen his defensive line-up ahead of the new season.

The 31-year-old joined FC Barcelona from Arsenal in 2014 for an estimated fee of £15 million, but ongoing injury problems left the defender with only 21 official appearances since the transition. The Belgium centre-back was on loan at Italian side AS Roma last season, but struggled to get consistent first team football.

A move to Crystal Palace could tempt Vermaelen as it would offer him another shot at consistent first team football, something he has yet to have in over four years. Albeit having two years remaining on his current contract, the player’s representatives are reportedly keen to return to the Premier League, with the city of London in particular.
