Whose Title is it Anyway?

Nothing has ever been straight forward in the Premier League. There’s almost always the inevitable ‘slip up’ or fixture to throw a spanner in the works. We possibly saw the first of these when Crystal Palace went 2-1 up against Chelsea and furiously held on for almost 90 minutes, if you include injury time.
Due to the loss against an in-form Palace side and Tottenham’s subsequent victory over Burnley the title race seems have opened up and is far from clear cut anymore.
So, Tottenham, who are 7 points behind the leaders, have what appears to be a straightforward victory over a struggling Swansea team where another 3 points are almost certainly assured. With one of the best defence in the league and their teams only noticeable absence being top scorer Harry Kane. They can quite easily for them, add another 3 points to their tally.
Yet, for Chelsea, things seem tougher. Antonio Conte’s 3 man defence now being found out and not as assured as when first introduced. With now only 2 clean sheets in their last 9 compared to 11 from their previous 14. They’re back to their old ways.
Although Cesc Fabregas has looked fresh, and Willian preferred to Pedro when fit, there hasn’t been much change in their starting 11 in recent weeks.
Is Conte’s reluctance to change a winning team causing the team to stagnate at the important run-in stage of the season?
The challenge that Manchester City will bring to Stamford Bridge this evening could be significant. Depending on which City side turn up. Frustratingly frail at the back and void of inspiration when it matters? Or the team with the ability to retain possession and really hurt teams with intuitive passing and flowing moves? Combine the latter with Sergio Aguero’s deft and clinical finishing could be all the difference, that is if City want to remain in the title fight.
Much has been made of manager Pep Guardiola’s ability to get the best out of him and his future at the club, I believe a lot will depend on tonight’s performance and how he utilises him. Let’s hope for another twist in this season’s title race.
