The future of Diego Costa has been hanging around Stamford Bridge like a bad smell. With Antonio Conte apparently texting the Spaniard earlier on in the summer saying that his star striker was no longer wanted.

Costa, who has been in Brazil for much of the summer, still hasn’t reported back for training. The Blues are pondering whether to enter a legal battle with the 28-year-old as he misses week after week of training.

The never ending saga seemed to have taken a new twist in the past few days as the current Premier League Champions announced that Costa was part of their 25 man squad for the season. This raised eyebrows as it was certain that Diego, who scored 20 goals last season, spoke out in an interview suggesting he had been treated like a “criminal” by the London club.

Atlético Madrid are chasing after his signature but due to their transfer embargo, Simeone would not be able to play any new signings until January 2018 so Costa has had to stay put for now. Having taken to Instagram in a video wearing an Atlético shirt, Costa has made it clear where he wants to go after being shunned by Conte, “I must return to Atlético Madrid next season. I want the deal with Atlético resolved this month.”

“My idea would be to go to Madrid, train there, get in the best physical shape and be ready to fire ahead of the World Cup. Simeone wants me. It is very clear. I have always had a bond with him. The fans and people love me there. They respect me. They see me as a person and a footballer.”

Earlier today, Chelsea announced their Champions League squad for the competition which Costa was left out of.

With Madrid likely to sign Diego back in January when their embargo is lifted, Costa needs to stay clear of playing for Chelsea in this year’s Champions League, otherwise, he would be cup-tied for Atlético if he was to return. As Chelsea look to move the man who helped them win 2 Premier League titles in three years on, Costa will need to be available for selection should Atlético get past the group stages.
