In an interview with German daily BILD, Red Bull Leipzig sporting director Ralf Rangnick says the club almost signed French star Kylian Mbappé when he was 16-years-old.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward has made a stunning start to life at his new club despite a potential price tag of €180million resting on his shoulders, making him the second most expensive player of all time come this time next year.

Speaking to Germain outlet Bild, Rangnick revealed: “We had Kylian Mbappé all but signed. The problem was we had just parted ways with Alexander Zorniger. We didn’t know at the time who would be our coach and how it would continue.”

Mbappé’s father was willing to allow his son to join the German side if Ragnick was in charge, though it was something Ragnick was reluctant to give his word on so early after Zorniger’s dismissal.

“Kylian’s father said to me that if I could say for sure that I would become the new manager, he would entrust his son to me immediately. But in February [2015], I could not give him that promise yet.”

Since his debut, the French wonderkid has taken over the world of football; he scored six goals in AS Monaco’s Champions League semi-final run last season before making a move to rivals PSG on a season-long loan deal with a permanent move likely to happen next season.

The Frenchman capped off an amazing 2017 with a Ballon d’Or nomination and has become a regular in Didier Deschamps France squads.
