Brighton defender Connor Goldson, previously at Shrewsbury Town and Cheltenham Town, has miraculously recovered from heart surgery and is hoping to make a return to Brighton and prepare to play in the Premier League. The 6 foot 3 centre-back had preventative surgery on 30 March after an issue was detected during a screening in February carried out by the club.

Speaking about receiving the outcome of the scans, Goldson added: “I was crying my eyes out. I thought at that time my career might be over. I thought the world had ended. But the more people you speak to, the more you know about what’s going to happen.”

“Once I had talked to the surgeon I always knew I was going to come back and play. He said there was no doubt, so I had no doubts in my mind.”

“I could have carried on playing and it could have carried on growing and maybe nothing would have happened,” he said. “But if something did happen, you wouldn’t be able to tell what was going on and it would have been death straight away on a football pitch, without a chance of resuscitation.”

After 5 months of tough recovery and constant doubt about when Connor could return to football, the Premier League awaits for him and his team-mates following promotion from the Championship. He could return to league action when Brighton begin the new season at home to Manchester City on August 12.
