With it looking more and more likely that Aston Villa will go down, we’ve decided to look at five players who could be crucial into sending Aston Villa straight back up to where they should be.
Despite having one of his worst seasons, I believe that Bacuna could be as crucial to Villa next season as Adel Taarabt was for QPR in the 2010/2011 season, where Taarabt single-handedly sent QPR back into the Premier League after a long wait. Bacuna is a similar player to Taarabt, but however most of the time gets played out of position and this effects his impact in a game. Bacuna had a very good first season in Claret and Blue, scoring 5 goals at wing-back in the 2013-2014 season, including a ‘worldie’ of a freekick against Manchester City. However, in the last two seasons the Curacao midfielder has only managed one goal; against Leicester in an FA Cup Last 16 match. Most Villa fans do know of the player’s capabilities, and they hope he could be one of the key performers next season in sending Villa back up.
The young Danish International is regarded as Villa’s best centre-back by the fans. Picked by former fan favourite Martin Laursen to help ex-manager Paul Lambert in 2013, Okore has had quite a few big injuries which has stopped him from having a proper run out in the side. But when he’s featured however, fans do see the young maverick which interested Chelsea in 2012. Villa fans know that it might be hard to keep Okore in the summer, especially with concerns rising about him not being offered a new contract, but if they keep him and he stay’s fit he could be a real boost to their promotion chances.
After his mistake in the weekend, 99% of Villa fans have fell out of love for current ‘keeper Brad Guzan – believing that the American has been given to many chances and needs to be sold. If he is indeed sold in the summer, Villa already have a good young replacement in former Norwich youngster Jed Steer. The former England U21 international has really impressed Huddersfield fans this season – during his loan there. I believe Steer should be given a chance as he’s now had a season in the championship and has the potential to be the Villa goalkeeper for many years to come.
One of the reasons why some fans have been getting on current manager Remi Garde is because of his unwillingness to play youngsters despite the plight the first team are in. And one of these youngsters which should be featuring is Rushian Hepburn-Murphy. The England U19 international made his Villa debut last season coming on with ten minutes left in Villa’s 4-0 win at Sunderland. Despite not featuring since Hepburn-Murphy has been playing very well for the Aston Villa U21’s, and could easily make more of an impact than current striker Rudy Gestede. If Hepburn-Murphy gets games next season he could really be crucial to this Aston Villa team.
Last but not least is another academy prospect and England U19 international – Andre Green. The skilful winger has came on from the bench in Villa’s last two matches and has really made an impact when he has came on. He can really light up the championship with best mate and colleague Hepburn-Murphy and get Aston Villa back to the Premier League, and if the pair were to reach their potentials, many other ‘big clubs’ may ‘come knocking’ on Villa’s door.
