Arsenal News Southampton Transfer Rumours

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal could be set to make a shock swoop for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman was linked with a move to Liverpool earlier in the summer, but the transfer stopped after the Merseyside club admitted foul play.

A deal between the player and club appears highly unlikely as of writing with Southampton unwilling to let any of their best players depart unless a major offer comes in whilst the centre back still favours a move to Liverpool. Arsenal are said to be looking for defensive reinforcements in the short-term with the club reportedly willingly open to offers for Calum Chambers whilst captain Per Mertesacker is retiring next summer.

Van Dijk joined the Saints two years ago for a fee around £13 million from Celtic and has been hailed as one of the best defenders in the league for his consistent form. In this two-year period, the player has been linked with a move to some of England’s biggest clubs such as the aforementioned Arsenal, and Liverpool, alongside other clubs like Manchester City and Chelsea.
