While Rob Holding might not have been the most talked about signing or the most expensive signing, His first few performances in an Arsenal shirt sure had people talking. Many did not know who he was or what to expect from him when his move to the north London club was announced. Many considered the signing an underwhelming one but that opinion changed quickly seeing his performances against the likes of Leicester and co.
Rob Holding had a good set of pre-season games with Arsenal, netting his first goal ever in an Arsenal shirt vs Chivas. And with the likes of Gabriel and Per, the Arsenal captain who were sidelined with injuries, Holding got his first Premier league start for Arsenal in the very first game of their season against Liverpool. Arsene Wenger fielded an inexperienced Centre back partnership of Holding and Chambers and the risk did not really pay off. But Holding did more than what was expected of him, showing composure and playing with maturity. The Next game, Holding was involved in a Centre back pairing with the experienced Laurent Koscielny and although the attack let the game down for Arsenal, Holding and Koscielny ran the show holding their front, not letting Leicester breach their defense. And this partnership continued to do well against Watford too. Holding in his 3 league appearances has 1.3 interceptions per game, 1.3 tackles per game and 1.3 blocks per game which is very impressive for a player with no previous PL experience.
Rob Holding might lack the experience of playing in the bigger leagues but he is a very composed and matured individual who plays and focuses on getting the job done. His partner in defense, the Arsenal captain Koscielny speaking of Holding in an interview with Arsenal, said ” I think he has the quality to play for Arsenal. If he signed for us it is because he has all the qualities of a defender to play for Arsenal.” And it isn’t just Koscielny who believes in Holding, It’s the man who brought him to Arsenal too. Arsene is known to have an eye for talent. Many did not know much when Koscielny was brought into Arsenal either but fast-forward, he is one of the league’s best defenders and also one of France’s best.
With the arrival of Mustafi, Holding will have to keep performing well to keep his place. But with competition comes the chance to develop. Rob Holding is the type of defender who likes to dribble and intercept, play the ball off the ground. Can be a set piece threat and is very good at blocking. Also, another impressive aspect of his game is his passing. In his 3 league appearances, Holding has a pass success rate of 78.7.
While Rob Holding might not be over hyped, over-payed for as the rest. He sure has the potential as they do. In the day and age where players are assessed by their price tags, Holding for 2 million is steal for Arsenal. Holding has what it takes to go all the way. Although he has his share of shortcomings, if he gets regular first team chances, he sure can develop and evolve into of England’s best defenders. So it is safe to say that Rob Holding is the one to look out for.
