According to reports, Arsenal and Manchester United target Thomas Lemar could leave Monaco for £55 million. The Premier League pair have been pursuing the winger throughout the transfer window, however, neither have made any concrete breakthroughs. Arsenal are reportedly the more interested club and it’s likely that the £55 million price tag could tempt José Mourinho into making a bid for the French international.

Lemar started his career with Caen and following a number of impressive performances, he attracted the attention of Monaco before joining the Ligue 1 champions in 2015. In his first season with the club, he scored five goals as Monaco finished third, however, the versatile midfielder made his breakthrough last season where he scored fourteen goals, including the winner against Tottenham in the Champions League. Lemar was also called up to the French squad last season.

Earlier on in the summer, the club stated that there would be “no departures.” However, after selling players such as Tiémoué Bakayoko and Benjamin Mendy, it would seem like the Ligue 1 club have realised that they can’t keep all of their star players.

With Kylian Mbappé rumours intensifying, Monaco’s resolve will be tested to the maximum. Having won Ligue 1 last season, ending the run of PSG’s dominance in the division, and the arrival of Neymar in France, keeping key players will be vital for Leonardo Jardim if there’s any hope of retaining the title.

Arsène Wenger will be looking to strengthen his squad after their 1-0 defeat to Stoke and the signing of Thomas Lemar will allow competition for both his wide-men and Mesut Özil, given the Frenchman can play in both positions.

Manchester United have made an impressive start to the season winning both of their games 4-0 against West Ham and Swansea respectively and with United boss Mourinho admitting new additions may be halted until January, it could leave Arsenal with a free run at the 21-year-old.
