Everton have stepped up their interest in Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud and are looking to complete the deal within this week. The Toffees are looking to strengthen their attacking options after top scorer Romelu Lukaku joined Manchester United.

Giroud, who was mostly used as a substitute last season after Arsène Wenger opted to move Alexis Sánchez to a centrally, scored 12 goals in the Premier League last season (16 in all competitions). Giroud’s position in the team has moreover been threatened by the arrival Alexandre Lacazette, who also became the club’s record signing.

Giroud, 30, might be tempted to move as he’s France’s first choice striker and with the World Cup following the next season, it will only be logical if he seeks a move to Everton. Giroud, who joined Arsenal as a replacement for then club captain Robin Van Persie, has scored 98 goals in his five seasons at Arsenal, often becoming the scapegoat for Arsenal’s poor performances in recent seasons.

Everton have reportedly asked Arsenal on the status of the Frenchman and are waiting for a response from Wenger whilst simultaneously preparing a £25 million bid, according to Mirror. Olivier Giroud will become Everton’s 9th major signing. While Arsène Wenger has maintained that Giroud wants to stay and fight for his place, it remains to be seen whether the lure of first team football makes the 30-year-old change his mind.
