Sokratis joined the Die Schwarzgelben from fellow Bundesliga side Werder Bremen in the summer of 2013 and has made 130 appearances for the club across a five-year spell. However, the Greek player only has one year remaining on his deal and newly appointed manager Lucien Favre is happy to let the 29-year old move on.

This summer will be the first under new upstairs leadership at the Emirates which sees former Borussia Dortmund chief scout Sven Mislintat lead recruitment alongside head of football relations Raul Sanllehi, with Emery also being allowed to contribute heavily and retain the power to intervene in regards to any potential incomings. This is part of a reshuffle that has occurred since the exit of legendary manager Arsène Wenger after 22 years at the helm.

The signing of Sokratis matches Arsenal’s new transfer criteria in regards to defensive acquisitions, as the Gunners look to add experienced first-team defenders to their squad in a bid to shore up a leaky defence that conceded a staggering 51 goals in 38 Premier League games last season.

In addition, the Premier League side are also looking to snap up 34-year-old Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free transfer from Juventus.

However, Arsenal will look to continue the legacy of Wenger by continuing to blend established stars with highly-rated youngsters, such as Konstantinos Mavropanos who arrived in January and shone on his Premier League debut at Old Trafford in April.
