Arsenal Contact Icardi Representatives

Arsenal have made contact with Argentinian striker Mauro Icardi’s entourage according to reports from Di Marzio. Napoli, Tottenham and Atletico are also in pursuit of the Internazionale striker. Some reports suggest that the 23 year old wishes to leave the club following their disappointing drop in form which saw them go from title challengers to missing out on a top 3 finish and Champions League football by a staggering 13 points.
Icardi’s talent was spotted at a young age when in 2007, clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Valencia, Sevilla, Arsenal and Liverpool were reportedly chasing him. He joined Barcelona in 2008. In 2011, Icardi was loaned out to Italian club Sampdoria who had an option to buy for €400 000 which they triggered at the end of that season. He went on to score 11 goals in 33 appearences for the club before joining Italian giants Inter in April 2013 for €11.7 million. He finished the season with 9 goals in 22 games. The 14/15 season was when he broke into the limelight, scoring 22 league goals which made him Serie A’s joint top goalscorer alongside Verona’s Luca Toni. Despite his goals, Inter finished the season in 8th, missing out on any form of European football. This reportedly lead to interest from Arsenal but their task was made difficult as Icardi did not want to leave and Inter did not want to sell.
In 2015, it was announced that Icardi would be Inter’s captain for the 2015/16 season at the age of 22. However, this season failed to live up to expectations for him as he only scored 16 goals in all competitions although Inter finished 4th in Serie A. He was left out this Summer’s Argentinian Copa America squad but was named in Argentina’s preliminary U23 squad for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Inter president Erick Thohir recently stated that Icardi was not for sale. He said, “Mauro is one of Inter’s treasures, he’s our captain and for us he’s off the market.” Despite this, it is believed that Arsenal have set up a meeting with Icardi’s representatives in London to discuss terms and should the offer seem satisfactory to Icardi, it will be up to him to push for a move. It is thought Arsenal will need to bid in excess of £40m for him. Arsenal are rumoured to be chasing a new striker following another disappointing season for their strikers with Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck failing to live up to expectations and Olivier Giroud going for long periods without scoring. They have also cooled their interest in Gonzalo Higuain due to his high price tag and age. A lack of leaders is another serious problem for Arsenal and it is believed that Icardi is a step along the path to remedy that.
