Former England manager Fabio Capello has dubbed Argentina’s midfield as “pathetic” following their 1-1 draw against Iceland on Sunday and claimed Lionel Messi suffered from the pressure built on him by Cristiano Ronaldo.

After Ronaldo lit up the World Cup with a hat-trick against Spain on Saturday night, Messi failed to inspire Argentina to victory against Iceland; missing a crucial penalty in the second half.

Capello, working as a pundit on Mediaset during the World Cup, stated that Messi let the pressure of Ronaldo’s performance get to him on Sunday. “Messi suffered the pressure after Ronaldo’s three goals,” the Italian revealed.

“Ronaldo wanted to do something more, because he hasn’t scored many World Cup goals before this,” added Capello.”

The Italian also analysed why Argentina could not break down Iceland, believing the Argentine midfield were of no use in the match, saying: “Argentina’s midfield was ridiculous, slow, always trying to go through the middle to hand the ball to Messi. I think Messi is a better player than Ronaldo, but the Argentina team isn’t helping him.”

Argentina boss Jorge Sampaoli was criticised for his approach and tactics, leaving Gonzalo Higuaín and Paulo Dybala on the bench against Iceland. Capello believes Dybala could have made the difference on Sunday.

Dybala is still a long way off Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. He has to improve his consistency and the way he participates in the overall moves,” continued Capello.

“He always waits for the ball to come to him, but that’s because he plays in a strong team that lets him do anything he wants. Dybala could’ve given Argentina something different, especially from distance, and I would’ve used him against Iceland.”

Argentina face Croatia in a crunch tie at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium on Thursday in what is a must-win game for Sampaoli’s side.
